George re-appointed as Minister of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food

George Eustice has been re-appointed as Minister of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

George said "I am really pleased to be re-appointed as Minister of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. I look forward to continuing to work with these industries at what is an incredibly exciting time".

 

George Eustice welcomes boost to police funding in Cornwall

The Home Office has announced a £450 million increase in police funding across England and Wales. This includes up to an additional £270 million in police force budgets, so individual forces have the resources they need to respond to changes in demand. Police funding in Devon and Cornwall could increase by up to £8.5 million in 2018/19 as a result of these changes.

The Autumn Budget included good news for Cornwall. Unemployment is at its lowest level since 1975, and here in Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, unemployment has almost halved since 2010. The National Living Wage is up by 4.4 percent, and more people on low incomes have been taken out of tax altogether.

The Government is also abolishing Stamp Duty for first time buyers, and local businesses will benefit from a business rates package.

George prepares for half marathon in aid of Carn Brea Leisure Centre

George Eustice MP is preparing to run a half marathon in November to raise vital funds for Carn Brea Leisure Centre.

The management team at Carn Brea has secured funding from Sport England to refurbish the pool and deliver other maintenance and improvements. Work has already started, and will ensure that facilities are sustained for existing users as well as the next generation of swimmers. However, Carn Brea needs to fundraise the rest of the money required to complete the project.

George Eustice wears it pink for breast cancer fundraiser

George Eustice MP is encouraging people to join him, and sign up to take part in the UK’s biggest pink fundraiser. Breast Cancer Now’s flagship fundraiser, Wear it Pink, will see thousands of people across the UK add a splash of pink to their outfits on Friday 20th October to raise vital funds for breast cancer research.

The event is in its sixteenth year, and has raised over £30 million to date for Breast Cancer Now’s life-saving research.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust

The problems at Treliske were laid bare recently in a concerning report by the Care Quality Commission that highlighted a long list of failures. The hospital has been rated as "inadequate" with surgery, maternity and gynaecology, end of life and outpatient services also rated as inadequate. As a result, we have seen the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust being placed into special measures.

An update on Brexit

It is now six months since Parliament took the momentous decision to trigger Article 50 and give formal notice that the UK will be leaving the European Union and becoming an independent, self-governing country again. Some progress has been made in the formal negotiations that have followed. The needs of Ireland, which shares a land border with the UK and incredibly close trading relations, has been recognised and it has been agreed that there should not be a hard border.
