HAYLE FILM CLUB:

Suffragette.  Saturday February 13 at 7.30pm.

The Saturday film is a richly detailed and authentic piece of historical storytelling. It follows Maud (wonderful Carey Mullligan) from workaday laundress to ostracised foot-soldier of a political movement. Through her friend Violet (Anne-Marie Duff) she meets the educated and impassioned Edith (Helena Bonham-Carter) and Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep). As she stops accepting her place at the bottom of life's heap, her refusal to be cowed loses her home, husband (Ben Whishaw), child and job. When sober presentations to Parliament and peaceful protests are ignored, the women take increasingly extreme actions and are arrested, interrogated (by Brendan Gleeson), imprisoned, and force fed - to no avail. Not every character here was a real person, but the setting, the escalating events and the final climax are wonderfully accurate.

As ever, at the Passmore Edwards Institute, house lights down at 7.30pm and home-baked refreshments after. Tickets at £5/£4 for members, reserve on 01736 752319, or book online at www.haylefilmclub.org.uk
