Trail of destruction as vandals strike Hayle

A SPATE of mindless vandalism in the Hayle are has left a trail of damaged cars and smashed windows.

A total of nine cars had their windows smashed and the shop front of Reawla Stores was also hit overnight between November 6 and 7.

Police believe all the crimes are linked and are appealing for help to catch the culprits, who they believe mighty have escaped in a dark-coloured Peugeot 206.

Linda Hitchman, who runs the village shop in Reawla, says she is reasonably certain local youths were not responsible for the damage.

"I have had some problems here before but this was a frenzied attack," she said.

"It wasn't a local lad, it's not the sort of thing they would do.  It's so frustrating; you just don't need the extra hassle.  I tun the business on my own so it's quite frightening and intimidating as well.

"A new window is going to cost £400, it is a lot of money for a small business when times are hard."

All the attacks took place in Leedstown, St Erth, Reawla, Hayle town centre, Gwinear, Angarrack and Gwithian. 

Hayle Police are particularly interested to hear from anybody who has seen a wooden Trevaskis Farm restaurant name plate that was stolen from one of the vehicles.

"If someone has got it hanging on their bedroom wall, parents should get in touch with me," said Ian Ridge, from Hayle Police.

"According to the CCTV footage one of the offenders was wearing tracksuit bottoms with white stripes and a hoody with a cap and drove a dark-coloured Peugeot 206.

"The crimes seem to be linked and they used some sort of pointed hammer to cause damage and there were only two thefts from cars.

"This is mindless damage which will cost several thousands of pounds to repair, not to mention the disruption and upset it has caused the owners."
